My New Film Blog

As some of you may know I'm a huge movie fan and also a total geek.

Every year I keep a new film diary to keep track of what I have watched, where I watched it, and how I rate those movies.
I have decided that for 2011 I would put this diary online. So here it is...

Entries will be live from January 1st 2011.

Another kitty cat - WIP

Having little to do is great - I've been so productive these last few weeks!

I hate to think of what it's going to be like next year when I'm back at college. All these creative juices are bound to dry right up...

Anyway, here's a terrible photo showing the new small drawing I've started. Pleased so far.

Quick Sketch - Spaniel

Something a bit different again, about half hour, gel pen on paper.

Sketchy

Again, being bored I thought I'd try something a bit different for me - a simple study of white still life.

Not looking too bad at the moment, but a lot of work to go. Terrible photo quality too so I apologise for that.

Sniffer - almost done

He's a one-armed bandit at the moment, but he's nearly there.

Window to the Soul

Very pleased with this. About 2 hours or so work, all in HB pencil on cartridge paper.
There are a few things I wish I'd done better, such as the eyelashes, but I got stuck and didn't know what to do.

Eye Eye!

Bored stiff at work today so did some drawing. Not finished but definitely well in progress.

Promises to Self for 2011

  • Make enough felt plushies (at least 15) to list on Etsy and make at least one sale before I go back to college in April
  • Complete at least one full size painting in acrylic (A4 or larger)
  • Finally experiment with the watercolours I bought an age ago
  • Do one finished drawing/sketch a month
  • Finish one amigurumi animal a quarter
  • Take photos and print them on hard copies once a quarter

All achievable? Let's hope so!

Sniffer update

Main body finished. 4 inches long. He's like a little sausage!!
Ears next, then legs, arms and tail.

Sniffer in progress

Wow, I'm not letting up on this new crochet skill with my third project fully underway.

Let me introduce you to Sniffer. He's a small and friendly pup currently half finished.

I'm really enjoying this one and it's my first time changing colours on the go.

He should be finished shortly.

Sid the Polar Bear is alive!

Here he is, all sewn together and finally finished.

He's turned a bit mischievious and keeps hiding in the Christmas tree. Naughty Sid!

Polar Bear Update

So, I have now completed the body and have made three of the legs. It's still looking a little bit odd, but I followed the pattern so what can you do??

Onto leg number four today, then just two ears and a tail to go.

Stumpy McDoodle Finished!!

So, here's my first finished crochet piece. He's Stumpy McDoodle (although he didn't actually end up that stumpy!), and he was an enormous learning curve.

There are a lot of mistakes in there (mainly the fact that I didn't realise you had to weave in the end; I just cut them off so I'm expecting him to unravel anytime soon), but I am pleased how he came out for a very first project.

Improvements in Crochet - New Project!

After finally managing to teach myself the very basics of crochet, including circles and tubes (which believe me were the bane of my life until I got them right!), I have taken on my first proper amigurumi patter - this polar bear.

Here is where I'm at so far:

Looks like a fish, not a polar bear!! That is supposed to be his head and the start of his body.
Here's hoping it starts to look more bear-like as I continue!

Laura

Just a quick sketch in the vain hope I can reboot my creative juices. I am aiming for at least one small sketch a week in the same journal. Hopefully I can manage that.

In progress - Watson

What's Sherlock Holmes without his Watson??

Halfway through I think. Martin Freeman as John Watson.

Sherlock Sketch

My first attempt at drawing the loveliness that is Benedict Cumberbatch as the new BBC Sherlock Holmes.

Not entirely happy with it, but I still like it and want to share it.

Very busy of late - Plushie Post!

Here are 3 more plushies I have made these last 2 weeks. Very pleased with them all, except for the crappy way the tail turned out on Mitch The Red Panda.

I hope you like!

All made from felt.

One side done!

Here we are: one finished side of Mr Rectangle. 17 stitches wide and 5 inches tall. And straight!
Now onto side two...

First Crochet Project is Go!

I have now embarked on my first full on crochet project.

I'm using a pattern from Lion Brand Yarn's website (a great place to get patterns for free) called Rudy the Rectangle.

Only done about 6 rows so far of his front so far but I am very pleased to say that it's all straight and even and going well! Hopefully I will finish the two main pieces this week and then tackle the more complicated subject of his legs next week.

Harold and George

My first born felt plushies are here!!

Here are Harold and George, made from felt and handstitched.

I love them. I can't wait to make more now!!

Improving

i.e. I can now single and double crochet in straight(ish) lines!

After spending a couple of hours on this, just hooking away, I am pleased with progress so far.

Next stops, half double crochet, triple crochet and crocheting in the round. Scary!

A Long Way to Go!!

To embarrass myself into improving, here I am posting my first attempt at crochet - simple single crochets (US Terms) in a straight line. Or not so straight as you will see....

It's very wonky and uneven and I am desperate to improve. So hopefully this can be the "Before" evidence photo in a constant improvement in crocheting!!!

Something to post??

God, it's been too long!!

Even though I actually have some free time now I just never feel like drawing. But I am trying to force myself into it, just to coax the creative juices.

here is a little something I've started and struggling with but seem to be getting somewhere:

Reference from pootienarna on DeviantArt.

I have also started learning how to crochet in the hope that will produce something on the horizon in the form of amigurimi animals. Let's just wait and see...

Pheasant Update

A little bit more done on the background for this one. Still not happy with it, but I have resolved to finish it now and then open it for criticism then.

Another WIP

And of another bird!

This was supposed to be a gift to someone but I'm not sure it's going well enough. I think I'll do a little more and then restart if necessary. Hmm..

Latest WIP

In pastel pencil this time. Having a hard time with the pond weed but I do like the froggie's face.

Yan Wilkinson - Finished?

I think it's done! This took a lot of work, and I had to simplify the background quite a lot and darken it so Yan didn't get lost within all the detail, but I think it works.
Actually, scratch that. I'm dead chuffed with it!!

Yan Wilkinson - WIP 4

Done some hard graft on this today. It's shaping up now with most of the background in.

It seems to be really coming along now, although I'm a little concerned over the similarity of tones in his face, the background and his jacket. Hmm.

Yan WIlkinson - WIP 3

I've done a bit more. I'm so pleased with the way this is going. I might possibly be thinking this might be one of the best pieces I've ever done???

Yan Wilkinson - WIP 2

I've started on the shading. I'm feeling pretty good about this one at the moment. A long way to go but I see a teeny resemblance so I'm happy (for the time being!!)

Yan Wilkinson - WIP 1

My favourite person of the moment, Yan, the lead singer from British Sea Power.
I have chosen to push myself and try to get a true likeness of Yan in a small portrait. Let's see if I manage to do that!!
I'm getting a lot of great advice and constructive criticism from the lovely folk at WetCanvas with this. I hope I actually achieve something with it.

Ladybird ACEO

Prismacolors on cartridge paper, my first finished coloured pencil work for ages!

It was for the monthly coloured pencil challenge on WetCanvas, and as ladybirds are my favourite insects I couldn't resist.

Elephant Update - poss finished?

I worked on this quite a bit last night and think I will call it a day. I'm concerned I ruined the overall atmosphere of the piece by concentrating too much on the individual wrinkles. So hmmm, not sure about this one.

Weekly Drawing Thread Feb 7-14 2010

An elephant this week. Not quite finished, but getting there.

They are such sweet animals, and it's hard to capture that. I hope I can do this fella some justice.

"Poppy" Finished

This is my "final" version of the little girl in the odd little hat. I have named her Poppy because it just seems to match her personality...

Pretty pleased with it as my first attempt at a child portrait. A few iffy bit still in there (her thumb being the worst), but I want to move on, and I think it works as is.

Weekly Drawing Thread Feb 1-7 2010

In an attempt to keep the drawing going, I have made a start on the weekly drawing thread on WetCanvas.
It's a young girl from their extensive reference library. I think it's going well so far, although I'm not looking forward to drawing that hat!!

Kitty ACEO finished!!

Well, I think it is. I had a little trouble with the whiskers. I tried a new approach - quick bursts along the paper with my electric eraser and I think they turned out okay. Not great but okay.

What do you think??

Kitty WIP - Update

Just a little more done. I'm totally stuck now with his bib and muzzle. The reference picture is really quite soft so it's hard to define the details. Any ideas?

Sorry for the bad photo as well. That's camera phones for you!!

WIP Update - Kitty ACEO

Just a quick post to update my progress on the kitten ACEO I started in December.

It's coming along slowly. Very slowly. And I'm having a little trouble with the dark and light juxtaposition of his fur but I'll keep at it.

As for the Rooster - well, no progress there so far. I haven't had any inspiration for a while. I'm nearly at my deadline for that one too. Must make myself finish it off!!
